Dr. Deborah L. Burris

Dr. Deborah L. Burris holds a B.M. in Music Education,a M.M. in Opera/Musical Theatre with a concentration in conducting and production, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in music education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.  She is retired as a Clinical Associate Professor Emerita in the College of Education and Human Services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  In addition to her years at SIUC, Dr. Burris was tenured and served as Chair and Professor of Music Education in the Conservatory of Music at Baldwin Wallace University, Berea, Ohio, served on the faculty in the SIUC School of Music, Director of Music at Carbondale Community High School, Carbondale, Illinois, and Adjunct Professor in Music at John A. Logan College, Carterville, Illinois.

Dr. Burris has been an Instrumental and choral clinician and guest conductor on the regional, state, and national levels. She was an active presenter at NAfME (MENC), Association of Teacher Education, – national and state Conferences in the area of Music Education Curriculum Design and Instruction and Supervision, has served as a contributing editor for The Woman Conductor, the official publication of Women Band Directors International, and a contributing author for Classroom Management in the Music Classroom.  She has served as IMEA District VI Band and Choral Chairperson, instrumental and vocal adjudicator for numerous competitions including IHSA, OMEA and MMEA, parade and field competitions, as well as, adjudicator and site director for the national Creative Artists Workshops Musical Carousel.  Dr. Burris served as an Associate Conductor for the Illinois Youth Chorale European Tour.  Throughout her career, Dr. Burris’ performing ensembles’ have won acclaim at local, state, and national levels and toured extensively throughout the Mid-West.  Dr. Burris has directed/conducted over 75 musical stage productions.  She has also served as a music education program reviewer and an accreditation team member for teacher education program accreditation for the Illinois State Board of Education.  Dr. Burris has been a workshop presenter for teachers and administrators regarding the connection between music and learning throughout her career. Dr. Burris received the 2010 NTT Excellence in Excellence in Teaching Award for the College of Education and Human Services at SIUC and has been named to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, tapped as an honorary faculty member to Omicron Delta Kappa, inducted into Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Mu Phi Epsilon and twice named as an Outstanding Young Woman of America.
